According to reports in Portugal, Barcelona winger Aliaksandr Hleb is very close to joining Benfica on loan.
The Belarus international, 29, is surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou and is currently assessing his options as he looks to find regular first team action.
He is expected to hold down a regular spot on Benfica’s left wing, a position in need of a reinforcement following the departure of Angel di Maria to Real Madrid earlier in the summer.
The former Arsenal man will reportedly sign for Benfica on a season-long move, with the Eagles securing the option to make it a permanent deal at the end of the season.
Hleb, who joined Barcelona from Arsenal in 2008, has failed to impress at the Catalan club, and spent last season on loan at VfB Stuttgart, whom he had already represented before his time in the Premier League.
Barcelona spokesperson Sergui Noguera confirmed that Hleb is on his way out of the club, but did not wish to reveal the player’s destination.
“Hleb is still training with us, but it is true that he will leave the club,” Noguera told A BOLA. “The coach told him he should find an interesting solution for his career, because it would be very hard for him to find chances to play here.
“We cannot give out details about negotiations, we never do, we only talk when things are finalised. And in this case we will assume the same position. We will only speak in the end.”
